Sustainable San Mateo County

Sustainable San Mateo County

Did you know ...

  • Waste disposed into landfills is down 19 percent since 2000.
  • Transit ridership increased from 9 percent to 12 percent over the past year.
  • Unemployment has dropped from 5.1 percent in 2003 to 4.3 percent in 2005.

Sustainable San Mateo County's principal mission is the long term improvement of our region's environment, economic vitality, and social equity through the promotion of sustainability, which is defined as meeting the needs of this generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Established in 1992 by a group of concerned citizens, Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is a public benefit corporation dedicated to promoting those changes in attitude and action(s) necessary to build a sustainable San Mateo County through education, public presentations, projects and written materials.

Since 1997, SSMC's centerpiece publication has been the annual Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo County, a Yearly Report Card on our County's Quality of Life. The Indicators reports on approximately 30 indicators of the County's quality of life such as economic trends, unemployment, poverty, land use, transportation, housing affordability, per pupil funding and water quality. The Indicators compiles many interdependent issues into a single source for decision-makers and citizens to monitor progress toward sustainability or away from it in any given area. The research, writing, and editing is accomplished with community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.

Sustainable San Mateo County released the 2006 edition of "Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo County: A Yearly Report Card" at the Progress Seminar, a countywide leadership conference in April.
