Eliminate Curbs and Gutters

Eliminating curb and gutters will help to reduce water velocity, silt accumulation in waterways, the amount of pollutants entering waterways, and stream water temperatures.

Replace curbs and gutters with gravel, grass, or vegetated swales. Replacing curbs and gutters with swales will allow storm water to infiltrate the soil where it lands, reduce runoff and erosion, while allowing pollutants, such as lawn fertilizers, to be absorbed into and by cleansed by the ground.

Line the swales with gravel, native fescue grass, or better yet, plant in the swales with native plant material. The plant material will also provide opportunities to increase biodiversity and connectivity throughout the neighborhood.
