Commissioning

Commissioning a building refers to the process of hiring someone outside of the design team to evaluate various systems such as: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, controls, fire management, sprinklers, elevators, and security. Ideally, they are evaluated in relation to one another, as well as individually.

"Commissioning involves examining and approving (or withholding approval of) building systems to verify aspects of building design, ensure that the building is constructed in accordance with the contract documents, and verify that the building and its systems function as intended."

An early start to commissioning will gain the most cost benefits, and the longer a building is commissioned after occupancy, the more energy savings will be realized.
