Whether you garden for beauty or for food production, these season-appropriate lectures will guide you through the steps of getting a garden started and maintaining it in an organic and sustainable manner. Learn the basics of gardening without harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers that pollute our surrounding land and waterways, and expose all of us including our children to toxic residues.

This lecture series is offered to further our goals of promoting composting and organic and sustainable methods of caring for your home and garden. Please join us to hear these informational and inspiring speakers.

Alane Weber brings 35 years of professional horticulture and agriculture experience to this important topic of sustainable gardening. She currently teaches composting and sustainable gardening for the Master Composter Program, lectures throughout the State at garden clubs, and local events, and can be seen and heard occasionally on television & radio.

Planning and Planting a Drought Tolerant Garden
This lecture will focus on understanding drought tolerant plants and the characteristics that make them suitable for growing in our seasonal weather pattern here in the San Francisco Bay areas Mediterranean Climate. This includes, but is not limited to, many of our own California Native Plants that survive during dry summers on grasslands, meadows and hillsides. Now is the time to start planning your drought-tolerant garden so you can be ready to install it soon after the first rain of the season. Recommendations for sustainable and healthy planting instructions, subsequent care and culture and some suggestions for style and design will be included in the lecture.

Preparing for a Fall and Winter Vegetable Garden
This lecture will cover the planning and planting of fall and winter vegetables that will produce in late fall and, with the right timing, throughout the winter season. Detailed instructions for starting seedlings and/or purchasing nursery grown starts; suggestions for planting into existing summer veggies without disrupting the current harvest; and, tips and hints for maximizing water use and reducing erosion over the rainy season. All information made for sustainable/organic garden care only.

IPM for Organic/Sustainable Gardens
This lecture will cover the principles of INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT, focusing on plant health benefits from healthy soil, and proper plant care and culture and appropriate fertilization. The discussion will include the biology and life cycles of some common garden pests, revealing biological management methods for reducing pest problems. Garden maintenance can then be integrated between sustainable biological tools and healthy management methods.
